The Chairman of Carmarthenshire County Council for 2013/2014 is Councillor Terry Davies, MBE.
Councillor Davies was elected to the office of Chairman at the Annual meeting of the Council held on 15th May 2013, and will serve until the next Annual Meeting which will be held on 21st May 2014.
Councillor Davies has represented the Gorslas Electoral Ward (which includes Cefneithin and Drefach) since May 2004. He is also a member of Gorslas Community Council (since 1977) and has served as Chairman of the Community Council on six occasions.
A native of Gorslas, Councillor Davies has lived in the village for the whole of his life. He has worked at Cwmgwili Colliery as an electrician; for the Welsh Development Agency; Amman Gwendraeth Partnership; and also for Menter Cwm Gwendraeth and Amman Valley Enterprise. Councillor Davies has also held a number of positions within the National Union of Mineworkers. He has been involved in youth and community work, including Gorslas Junior Youth Club; Cymru’r Groes; The Diocese of St David’s; St Lleian’s Parish Church, Gorslas; Gorslas and Cross Hands Men’s Society; Gorslas Welfare Association; Gorslas History Society; “Papur y Cwm”; South Wales Miners’ Eisteddfod; National Urdd Eisteddfod; the Coalfields Regeneration Trust; Carmarthenshire Local Sports Council; Community Chest (Sports Council Wales); and Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen.
Councillor Davies was accepted into the Green Robe of the National Eisteddfod 2006, and was awarded the MBE for Services to the Community in 2008.
His interests include local history, photography and sport, and he has played rugby for Mynydd Mawr Schools; Llanelli Youth RFC; Llanelli Athletic RFC; Llanelli RFC; Carmarthenshire County RFC; and Cefneithin RFC.
The Chairman is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council, and is elected at the Annual General Meeting. Duties include chairing full meetings of the Council, representing the Council at formal and ceremonial occasions in the County and beyond. He welcomes visitors to the County and attends and supports events organised by local people and organisations.
During his / her year of office the Chair of the County Council usually raises funds for local charities. Councillor Davies is continuing this excellent work, and will be supporting the British Heart Foundation and Teenage Cancer Trust.
