Carmarthenshire Educational Psychology Service seeks to apply the psychology of how people learn, behave, think and feel to facilitate positive change which will support all our children and young people in reaching their potential.

We work with and/or on behalf of children and young people to jointly problem solve issues that cause significant con

cern for those who are supporting their development mainly  in schools, but also in preschool settings, at home, in foster placements and respite care settings. Concerns are often about behaviour, learning, social interactions and emotional well-being.

We call this process Consultation and bring to the knowledge that those working with the child/young person/group/organisation have our psychological perspective of the situation.  Together with this shared understanding it is possible to plan actions that should lead to a solution and to review progress to ensure the plan is working.

We also play a part in the multi-agency process of identifying significant special educational needs and recommending how they can best be met.

We provide an allocation of time each year to different settings and plan the use of this with them. Professionals working with the child/young person will seek parental permission and involvement if they want to involve the link educational psychologist. If parents have a concern about their child they should discuss this with the school or setting.
We also contribute widely to policy and systems development activities within the Authority.

We have produced a Handbook for Parents, Schools and other professionals who are interested in how we work. This can be found in the Useful Documents section on the right.
