Give drink-driving the red card
The Road Safety Unit has recently launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the consequences of drink-driving.
Llanelli’s The Scarlets rugby team are backing the campaign and have helped to launch it before the festive season gets underway. Posters, banners and z-cards have been produced with some thought-provoking facts and figures on drink-driving and the consequences of a conviction.
Figures show that approximately one in seven deaths on Welsh roads involve drivers who are over the legal limit. And causing death by dangerous driving whilst under the influence of drink will result in a maximum 14 year jail sentence and a minimum two year driving ban.
Remember a person can easily still be over the limit the morning after an evening’s drinking - it can take over 10 hours to be alcohol free after drinking one bottle of wine and up to 18 hours after drinking four pints of strong lager or ale.
Examples of the promotional material being distributed are available for you to download here. If you want to be legally safe to drive and avoid a conviction, information is available that will help you calculate roughly when you will be alcohol-free. There is also information on what would happen if you were caught driving whilst under the influence of drink and how a criminal record can really impact on people’s lives.
