The Chairman of Carmarthenshire County Council for 2012/2013 is Councillor Mrs Siân Elisabeth Thomas.
She was elected to the office of Chairman at the Annual meeting of the Council held on 17th May 2012, and will serve until the next Annual Meeting which will be held in May 2013 A native of Cwmaman, but brought up in the Swansea Valley – Ystradgynlais and Pontardawe, Councillor Thomas is married to David. She holds a number of positions in public life, and has published 3 computer related books in the Welsh language.
Councillor Thomas has represented the Penygroes Electoral Ward (which includes Caerbryn and Blaenau) since May 1999. She is also a member of Llandybie Community. The Chairman is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council, and is elected at the Annual General Meeting. Duties include chairing full meetings of the Council, representing the Council at formal and ceremonial occasions in the County and beyond. She welcomes visitors to the County and attends and supports events organised by local people and organisations.
During his / her year of office the Chair of the County Council usually raises funds for local charities. Councillor Thomas is continuing this excellent work, and in her acceptance speech the Chairman stated that she was extremely proud of all the volunteers in the County, and to this end will ensure that every penny raised towards her charities will stay within the County. She will be supporting Glanamman Hospital, Hafan Home in Ammanford, which looks after those who suffer from dementia, and Cwm Gwendraeth Diabetes Association.
