Population and Demography

These pages contain information on the population of Carmarthenshire. Here you will find the population as recorded by the Census in 2001 as well as mid-year population estimates that are produced by the Office for National Statistics on an annual basis. These estimates give an indication of the population growth within the County based on the actual number recorded by the Census in 2001.

The current population of Carmarthenshire is 180,717 according to the 2010 Mid-Year Estimate, with the population of Wales estimated at 3,006,430. Carmarthenshire has the fourth highest population out of the 22 local authorities within Wales and accounts for 6% of the total Welsh population.

Included in the 2006 Mid Year Estimates were the improved techniques for estimating international migration as declared by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2007. The 2006 estimates have been produced according to this new methodology, and the international migration element of the “components of change” as well as the subsequent population estimates for 2002 to 2005 have also been revised as a result.
