Primary School Meals

Carmarthenshire Catering Service provides school meals to 115 primary schools in the county. As an authority we have one of the highest school meal uptake in the country averaging at around 62% take up.

For just £2.00 a day your child will have a main meal and pudding. What more could you ask for??

A school meal accounts for one-third of a child’s daily nutritional intake and children can now benefit from some of the healthiest school lunches possible. But although the school lunches provided today are the healthiest they have ever been, they do still include some tasty old favourites such as beef, lamb or pork roast dinner and chicken curry. Vegetarians are also catered for by the catering department.

The menus are measured against tough national standards produced by a program called Saffron which becomes legislative law in September 2012- so by choosing school meals your child is sure to be having a well-balanced, tasty dish to prolong their energy for the afternoon.

Jamie Oliver Stated that:- ‘it has long advocated that children who are fed better, do better and recent research supports this and has proved that no matter what background a child is from, a hot, nutritious meal at lunchtime improves their behaviour and concentration in the classroom in the afternoon’.

As well as providing a healthy school meal Carmarthenshire County Council also organise themed days across the whole year as well as competitions to encourage pupils to socialize and try new dishes that they might not have experienced before.

Do not hesitate if your child has a special dietary requirement as they are catered for by the department. Please contact the Department of Education and Children on (01267)246537 for any further information.
