Sustainable Development (SD) is about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone now and for generations to come by:
Giving equal weight to the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of development, and
- Considering the long-term implications of our decisions, taking into account both the direct and indirect effects.
Sustainable development applies to us all as individuals in our homes, to our local communities, and shows that what we do locally affects the world as a whole.
Sustainable development is not only about preserving the natural world but is also about our health, our employment opportunities, our access to shops and services, the quality of our transport infrastructure and our sense of community and well-being.
Sustainable development is about integrating economic, social and environmental issues – effectively treating the Earth as though we intend to stay.
Carmarthenshire county council and sustainable development
Sustainable development (SD) is a guiding principle for all the council’s activities. We are committed to promoting SD through Council policies, strategies and services, and raising awareness of sustainable lifestyles amongst staff and local communities.
The council employs over 9,000 staff that deliver a range of services. There are significant opportunities for every service to play its part in reducing energy consumption, recycling and adopting the principles of sustainability when procuring buildings and other major assets. It is also a key priority for our Local Service Board (LSB) as outlined in their commitments to ‘Making Carmarthenshire a sustainable county’.
Council’s core value: Treating the Environment with Respect:
We aim to be a leader in the field of sustainability - improving the quality of life for local people while conserving the Earth’s resources and protecting the environment.
