Who the service is for
Sheltered housing is generally available to people who are over 60.
The service provided
The Sheltered Housing Service helps elderly people to live independently within the community. Sheltered housing includes bungalows as well as the traditional schemes. People living in all the local authority’s sheltered-housing properties have access to a sheltered scheme officer who can help with general advice and filling in forms.
Location
Across Carmarthenshire
Type of Accommodation
All accommodation the local authority provides is self-contained (that is, the properties have a kitchen and a bathroom). The sheltered housing service includes traditional blocks of accommodation, and bungalows.
When the service is available
Support is provided during normal office hours, with some flexibility to meet the needs of the service user. An out-of-hours on-call service is available for emergencies that arise outside of normal office hours. This is provided by the Careline service.
How long the service can be used for
People that move into sheltered housing consider the properties to be their own home and as a result, the service is provided until they move out of the property.
How to access the service
People access the service through the housing waiting list. Carmarthenshire County Council have a points-based waiting-list system in place to decide who to give priority to. People aged 60 and over are accepted. There is no upper age limit.
Cost
The service user may need to pay for the support they receive. The service provider will help the service user to claim Housing Benefit to cover the cost of the accommodation. If the person using the service does not receive Housing Benefit, they will need to pay the rent on the accommodation that is provided. Please contact the service provider for more information about this.
This service also receives funding from the Supporting People Grant, which is paid direct to the service provider by Carmarthenshire County Council’s Supporting People section.
