Affordable Housing Policy

Carmarthenshire County Council has adopted the following policy (on 3rd January 2008) to determine who will be given priority for affordable homes for sale.  Priority will be given to people who:

  • are aged 18 or over
  • cannot afford to fund a mortgage that would allow them to buy a home suitable for their needs on the open market and are able to finance the cost of the affordable home through a mortgage and deposit
  • are current residents of Carmarthenshire or  work in Carmarthenshire but live in a neighbouring County
  • have a long-standing local connection with Carmarthenshire.  This is defined as people who have previously lived in Carmarthenshire for a period of at least 10 years; people with parents who live in Carmarthenshire

As part of Carmarthenshire County Council’s commitment to affordable housing, we have secured a small amount of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government to use for a Homebuy Scheme.
The scheme is designed to help people buy a home on the open market, by lending up to 30% of the purchase price of the property to applicants who would normally then fund the rest of the cost through a mortgage.

Eligibility for the scheme is as above but will also include the following additional eligibility criteria:
Families with children, then couples.
Single people will not be eligible for Homebuy.

Priority will also be given to existing council and housing association tenants, and first time buyers.

The scheme will be administered by our partners at Gwyr Homes which forms part of Grwp Gwalia.

Please contact Jo Margetts at Gwyr Homes on 01792 488250, if would like further information about the Homebuy scheme.

Please note your expression of interest and completion of an application form does not guarantee your acceptance for the Homebuy scheme.
